Food labels

THINGS TO BE AWARE OF IF WANTING TO BALANCE THE ENERGY SEE-SAW

UNDERSTANDING FOOD PACKAGE LABELS

Before interpreting information on a food package label it first needs to be located , often the information is located on different parts of the label , and is visually represented in 2 ways

* MARKETING information = Large eyecatching text against a contrasting background ( aka we want you to see and read this )

* Ingredients = Small text against a NON-contrasting background

 Small text against a NON-contrasting background

, often well away from the other texts ( have your magnifying glass with you )

# So do we just throw the contents into ourselves and others .... ???? ......to be more positive about this we need

* pencil * paper , * calculator * magnifying glass

NOTE: VALUES USED TO CALCULATE FOOD ENERGY

* Carbohydrates 16 kj per gram ( 32 grams = 1 ounce .....good enough for our calcs. )

* Protein

* Alcohol

* Fats

LABELLING EXAMPLES ,USING ACTUAL FOOD LABELLING INFORMATION ( the text in brackets is added by me and some details are modified very slightly )

EXAMPLE ONE

# So , I have in front of me a box containing food items obviously intended to catch the eyes of kiddos and those involved in sugar craving

# Ingredients = very small pale text against a non-contrasting background ( magnifying glass job )

# Nutritional info. = ( the text in brackets is added by me )

* ENERGY 480 kj ( ?? weightwatching , looking for this value for your dieting ?? )

* protein 1g

* total fats 4.4 g

* total sugars 28g ( sugar craving for a " quick lift " )

* fibre ( a few gram )

* sodium ( minimal )

* food additives ( % not shown )

# SO NOW FOR SOME CALCULATIONS

protein =

fats =

sugars =

1g X

4 . 4 g X

28 g X

17 kj / g =

37 kj / g =

16 kj / g =

17 kj

163 kj

448 kj

---------

APPROXIMATE TOTAL ENERGY =

628 kj

=======

ACCORDING TO THE LABELLING THE ENERGY WAS 480 kj , WE CALCULATED 628 kj

( I WAS EDUCATED TO BELIEVE THAT 2 + 2 = 4 )

# The B O T T O M line of this ( aka = what you have been WEIGHTing for , so don't W A I S T it )

* Potential progressive ( unaware by you ) ENERGY IN which results in an inbalance of the ...... energy IN........energy OUT.... ( see-saw ) ...... the fats and facts of life are there to be analyzed

EXAMPLE TWO

# ( The text in brackets is added by me )

# Ingredients ( include.).....150c.....260.....1422 ( no % given for any of these additives )

# Nutrition:

* Energy 160 kj ( about 2 tablespoons )

( my calculated total energy for about 2 tablespoons = 340 kj )

( weight for it ..... about 40 % simple monosacharide sugars )

 EXAMPLE THREE

#

* Energy 600 kj ( half of the contents )

( my calculations for half of the contents = 750 kj )
